This picture was taken during our cross country trip from NJ to CA. The Volvo developed a clunk in the front end, which was becoming more pronounced within an hour's time. Like a reasonable Jalop with an older car, I travel with tools on hand. I put the car up on the stands at a gas station and investigated. I checked for play in all of the front end components. I checked all the hardware on the brakes. I even checked the CV axles for damage, torn boots, or missing hardware. With the sense of dread hanging over me, I got back on the road to my destination for the night which was two hours away.
The CV axle on the right side (part was 3 months old) failed catastrophically at highway speed, just 25 miles later. Thankfully I was able to limp the car and trailer into a truck stop to await a tow.
How many times have you heard something from your car that was not right, but didn't figure it out until it was too late?

I had a weird squeak in my engine bay that I couldn't diagnose on my 300ZX... it seemed to come from everywhere and was so intermittent it would often stop before I could pop the hood. Then, at 155MPH+ and 6000rpm+ my air conditioner clutch assembly popped apart sending the front portion into my radiator fan and making a horrific noise/shower of pieces. In reality, it wasn't life threatening... but at that speed you really don't want to hear the smashing of plastic and stuff falling out of your engine bay. Needless to say my shorts were very nearly browned.

My dad had a whole slew of Crown Vics as company cars throughout the years and they made all kinds of squeaks and rattles but they never did anything wrong. One day we're heading back from my doctor and we heard a new squeak from the right front but didn't think anything of it. 10 seconds later BAM!!! The whole right front suspension collapses into itself at 40mph. He kept it under control and we limped into a parking lot.

I remember a clunk from the rear and it turned out to be the rear roll bar that wasn't on tight enough...I installed it myself and didn't torque it enough. After a mechanic bounced it around a lot he found out the noise and wrenched a bit. Done in 5 minutes.
Who needs sway bars anyway

Almost had a similar issue when we bought my Brothers 76' F100 last weekend and drove it from GA to MA. We hit the NJ turnpike and started hearing a banging noise that increased and decreased with speed and stopped under hard braking. Unfortunately we had tools but forgot the jack so after 45 minutes of rolling around under the truck in the slush I released that due to exhaustion and spending 12 hours driving in a snow storm I forgot to check the wheel nuts.... Turns out three of the five were scary loose, We got them tight and all was well. sorry to here that it failed on ya.

Ex Volvo master tech here. Ball joints, control arm bushings, and spring seats are the common things on your Volvo. Any questions at all ever on your Volvo, diagrams, part component diagrams, anything, let me know buddy

Was driving across town in my beater '95 Neon, and stopped at a store for some reason. After leaving the store, and getting into my car to drive off, I heard an odd metallic rattling noise.
Thinking it was coming from another car, as it shortly went away, I drove off.
A fee minutes later, on the highway in the left lane, I heard it again, bouncing of the retaining wall.
"Is that me?" I said to the wife, riding shotgun.
Pulled off the highway, and once we got to the surface streets, the temp gauge spiked.
Shit.
Pulled a U-turn and into a gas station, where I found the coolant bottle was dry. Let it cool and popped the cap, looking for a leak.... saw some wetness at the front of the motor... oh boy. Put some water in it and.... it poured right back out of the water pump.
Thought about limping it home, but the wife convinced me to have it towed.
Good thing, too, because after I took it apart, I found metal shards in the timing belt from the pump shitting itself, and after I pulled the pump it locked up solid while I was spinning it in my hand.
